graphics problems - I think???

Ok for the last two days my pc has been locking up while playing QW. The screen freezes and if I press ctrl alt del it does not always bring up the task manager screen, and I have to just switch it off and start again.
Some times before it crashes the screen goes strange!, like a tv when the reception is bad! all bitty and like snow! This was also happening when I was just on the net.
My pc has been slow to start for a while so I have recently run defrag, virus scans, disc clean up and scan disc.
Then last night it froze and i waited and it came back but it was showing loads of colours in the walls and some of the walls were missing.
I have updated the graphics card drivers since this started.
Is this graphics card death? Anyone got any ideas for cures? I'm not sure if I should roll it back to last time it started properly.

I got intel core 2 quad @2.40GHz. 2.00gb ddr2 ram, nvidia 8600gts running XP pro.

I feel for you moosea. I hate it whenever I experience chronic graphics glitches. Do you have any antialiasing activated? I was having some issues with my ET:QW crashing in the past and when I turned down the AA it took care of it. If that works though, it doesn't really explain why it started being a problem all of a sudden.

Take your graphic card and put it on the SD computer ( if it's possible). If there is the same problem, your card is dead. R.I.P.

This seems like a good idea - I will indeed put SD's graphics card in my computer!!!! It is slower than my current card but it has the advantage that it works and it is free, Thanks Igor!! ;D ;D ;D

I think moosea is contagious. Mine did some kind of strange white screen crash tonight. I was able to ctrl-alt-del out of it though.

so we seem to have 'cured' problem - changed graphics card no more crashing but now i'm running an 8400!!!
So i cant shoot a thing ( yes, I know - not much change there!)
