Don't know why this popped into my head. I'm looking for something different to try I guess. Post up any tasty recipes that you are fond of. I guess I've been wanting to bake but haven't because it has been so hot and humid suddenly so chilly recipes are a good idea too. I know some of you (moosea) have to have some tasty secrets to share. Although from the sound of it moosea may end up working somewhere like here someday. Here's an easy and tasty recipe for No Bake Cookies. It sounds like these may be more of an American thing so I figured maybe our Euro pals may enjoy them as something different. Here is supposedly their origin. ¡No-Bake cookies became popular in the United States during the Great Depression because they didn't rely on rationed ingredients like eggs and sugar. They were also an efficient way to use up old cookies as most no-bake recipes relied on cookie crumbs instead of flour. While we're no longer subject to food rationing and the ingredients in no-bake cookies have become more elaborate, they're still a simple way to throw together a quick snack. Abercrab - I'd love a job at that place!!! In regard to cooking..... well I have a confession..... I don't really cook. I'd eat salads every day forever if I could! Maybe some soup sometimes!! But I do know that as kids my sister and I used to cook sweeties with my gran, from a real old Scottish recipe book. Things like toffee and macaroons and weird stuff! So I'm only good for sweet recipies!!! ( or salads!!) For those who don't know what macaroons are! Scottish The Scottish macaroon is a sweet confection with a thick velvety centre covered in chocolate and topped with roasted coconut. Traditionally they were made with cold leftovers of mashed potatoes and sugar loaf. When the macaroon bar became commercial the recipe no longer used mashed potato because of shelf life limitations. The modern macaroon is made from a combination (depending on producer) of: Sugar, Glucose, Water and Egg White. Macaroons www.madestuff.co.uk/2009/08/10/traditional-scottish-macaroon/ Scottish Tablet Traditional Scots Tablet: Granulated Sugar, Thin cream or Milk, Vanilla Essence. Put into a large pan 2 lb of granulated sugar and 3 teacups of Milk or Cream. Bring to the boil, stirring all the time. Let it boil for a few minuets. Again take the mix to the soft Ball stage at about 240 f, remove the pan from the heat, and add the vanilla essence. Place pan into basin of cold water and stir vigorously, the edges will start to set make sure you scrape them off and mix into the tablet, this is what gives tablet it’s special texture. Keep stirring until the mix is grainy throughout. This only comes with practice and if you don’t succeed the first time just reheat and start again. Pour into greased tins and mark with a knife. Kind of funny that one of my favorite treats is a recipe that comes from zman's side of the family that we call Potato Candy. I still make it from time to time. It is basically tons of sugar with some vanilla, milk(I use soy milk), butter(I use veggie butter), lots of peanut butter and the secret ingredient - mashed 'taters. It's got a lot of similarities to the 'Scottish' recipes moosea posted. I've bought a bunch of sugar and some chocolate so I can try some macaroons out when I get a chance. I'm not so big into coconut though so I may ignore that part. Maybe add some peanut butter, hehe. Yeah, and what is a Sunday Roast?
