Anyone taken the plunge(or thought about it at least) with an SSD drive? www.tomshardware.com/reviews/flash-ssd-nand,2741.html I've been keeping my eye on them for awhile now. Drive size has increased enough and price has decreased enough that I'm getting pretty close to getting one to try installing my operating system on. I have been running a striped RAID array for quite awhile now. I want to see first hand how one or maybe even an array of these drives would compare. They should blow the ole disc drives away.

Still a bit pricey for me (I'm a cheapskate ;D) I think I'd want 128GB to fit an OS and a few games, but an 80GB Intel X25-M is still £140 over here.
edit: Perhaps you could knock together a RAID array like this

Hehe, awesome video.
I'm leaning towards an Intel drive or two because they seem to be getting pretty good review from folks. I'm not ready to buy yet either, but it seems prices are starting to come down pretty nice.
Plus I do have a little bit of an inside connection at Intel so I might be able to get myself one at quite a deal.

Running SSD's from the early start here and serious...best upgrade ever!! OS starts in 5-10 seconds, programs startup very snappy and last but not least ETQW maps load as fast as you've never seen Real world difference between average-good SSD's is not that big (check OCZ Vertex(2), Intel X25-M or even WD SiliconEdge Blue). From off first quarter 2011 Intel will introduce more cheap and big SSD series. Best practice: -OS, apps and games on SSD. Data (audio/video/etc.) on harddisk/NAS. -Intel chipsets run good with SSD's, AMD's do have more slow performance (and no TRIM support) -Run TRIM supported SSD on TRIM supported OS (i.e. Windows 7), with newest Intel/AMD chipset drivers and SATA controller on AHCi setting. -Windows OS? No page-file, no hibernate, no systemrecovery: saves speed and lifetime As a 'real' gadget-freak I can say only SSD's will make it into my pc/laptop/htpc/etc. Only NAS is harddisk-ed for storage Ok, to much geek alert here ;D

prut, do you work in computer sales? Hehe, you have me sold, not that it took much of a push. I'll probably wait until the new year to see what's available.
What size are you using? Toyed with any kind of array?

Working in IT indeed, but this kind of stuff is more of a hobby as it is (now) mainly being used in home-environments (or the more expensive SSD's in even more expensive servers I've never touched until now). I'm using a OCZ Vertex 64gb, Samsung PM800 and a WD SE blue all in different setups and have had my hands on Vertex2 also. With a very clean Win7 install with some games, apps and a bit of data I've still over 30gb's of free space on that single 64gb SSD. Skip the RAID-setup, for a single one is fast enough for most purposes in my opinion. Well...save your money for it, because you'll gonna like it! What's your occupation(work/school)anyway?

What's your occupation(work/school)anyway? I have a degree in chemical engineering. My job in a big diesel manufacturing plant is kind of a mixture of management, engineering, and sales. I want to have about 128 Gb to play with so just for fun I may still get 2 64 Gb drives and stripe them.

I was thinking about an 80GB SSD for boot so i get the speed, and maybe a 1TB Drive in Raid 0 or something for storage.

That's a good idea zuluking, SSD for boot (i.e. Windows), most used programs and games for optimal speed. The remaining stuff on a harddisk for storage.
If you want Intel and can wait, wait on the G3-series. More cheap and fast than the G2 they have now.
If you want it now, check for a Crucial C300 or a OCZ Vertex2/Onyx2
